Innovation and Investment Visas
There are several visa options for those who want to do business in Australia. We can help you find the right one.
Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Visa
This is a temporary visa that lets people with business skills own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia.
Basic requirements
The applicant must:
- submit expression of interest (EOI) in SkillSelect
- be nominated by a State or Territory government agency or Austrade
- be invited to apply for the visa
The Subclass 188 visa has several streams:
Business Innovation stream
For people with business skills to operate a new or existing business in Australia.
Stay
Up to 5 years
Can be extended for another 2 years
Requirements
Applicants must:
- score at least 65 on the points test
- be under the age of 55
- have functional English
and
If invited to apply on or after 1 July 2021:
- have assets of at least AUD1,250,000
- an ownership stake in one or more qualifying businesses with turnover of at least AUD750,000 for least 2 of the 4 fiscal years immediately before you receive an invitation to apply
or
If invited to apply before 1 July 2021:
- have assets of at least AUD800,000
- an ownership stake in one or more qualifying businesses with turnover of at least AUD500,000 for least 2 of the 4 fiscal years immediately before you receive an invitation to apply
Significant Investor stream
For people who invest at least AUD5 million in complying Australian investments
Stay
Up to 5 years
Can be extended for another 2 years
Requirements
Applicants must:
- invest at least AUD5 million in venture capital funds and approved managed funds when invited
- have functional English
and
If invited to apply on or after 1 July 2021:
- have a genuine intention to hold that investment for the life of your provisional visa
or
If invited to apply before 1 July 2021:
- have a genuine intention to hold that investment for at least for 4 years
Investor stream
For people who invest at least AUD2.5 million in complying Australian investments.
Stay
Up to 5 years
Applicants must:
- have managed a qualifying business or investments to the value of at least AUD1.5 million for at least 1 of the 5 fiscal years immediately before you are invited to apply
- intend to live in a specific State or Territory
- score at least 65 on the points test
- be under the age of 55
- have functional English
and
If invited to apply on or after 1 July 2021:
- have assets of at least AUD2.5 million
- make a complying significant investment of at least AUD2.5 million
or
If invited to apply before 1 July 2021:
- have assets of at least AUD2.25 million
- make an investment of AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory
Entrepreneur stream
For people who carry out entrepreneurial activities in Australia
Stay
Up to 5 years
Applicants must:
- be undertaking, or proposing to undertake, a complying entrepreneur activity in Australia
- have a genuine intention to continue this activity
- be under the age of 55
- have competent English
and
If invited to apply on or after 1 July 2021:
- must be endorsed by your nominating State or Territory government agency to develop your entrepreneurial concepts
or
If invited to apply before 1 July 2021:
- have a funding agreement of at least AUD200,000 to carry out eligible entrepreneurial activities
