SUBCLASS 500

Student Visa

This visa lets people undertake study in Australia.

Basic requirements

The applicant must:
  • be enrolled in a course of study in Australia
  • hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for their stay in Australia, unless exempt
  • must be 6 years or older
  • prove you have a welfare arrangement, if you are under 18
This visa lets you visit Australia to study any of the following:
  • independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
  • schools (primary and secondary)
  • secondary school exchange program
  • vocational education and training (VET)
  • higher education
  • postgraduate research
  • non-award courses
  • international students sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs or Defence.
With this visa you can
  • participate in an eligible course of study
  • stay for up to 5 years and in line with your enrolment
  • bring family members to Australia with you
  • apply online in or outside Australia

SUBCLASS 407

Training Visa

This temporary visa lets people undertake work training activities to improve skills for a job or an area of study in Australia.

Basic requirements

Sponsors must be one of the following types of organisations:
  • an organisation lawfully operating in Australia
  • government agency
  • foreign government agency
  • religious institution
Applicants must:
  • be sponsored
  • be nominated (unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency)
  • be invited (if your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency)

SUBCLASS 417 & 462

Working Holiday Maker program

The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is for young adults who want an extended holiday in Australia while working to fund it. It includes the Working Holiday (Subclass 417) visa and the Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa.

Basic requirements

The applicant must:
  • be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - except for Canadian, French and Irish citizens up to 35 (inclusive)
  • have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • not be accompanied by dependent children

If you complete six months of specified work in regional areas while on your second Subclass 417 or 482 visa, you are eligible to apply for a third visa. This means you can stay in Australia for up to a total of three years.

‘Regional Australia’ currently includes key regions in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, as well as all of the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Tasmania.

The Subclass 417 visa can be used three times
1st working holiday visa

Stay

12 months

Applicants must
  • hold a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - except for Canadian, French and Irish citizens who can be 18 to 35 (inclusive)
  • apply online from outside Australia
  • not be accompanied by dependent children
  • not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 417 or 462 visa. If you have previously been in Australia on a subclass 417 visa, see 2nd working holiday visa.
2nd working holiday visa

Stay

12 months

Applicants must
  • have previously entered Australia on a Subclass 417 visa. If you haven’t, see 1st Working Holiday Visa.
  • hold a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction
  • be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - except for Canadian, French and Irish citizens who can be 18 to 35 (inclusive)
  • have completed 3 months of specified work on your 1st Working Holiday visa
  • not be accompanied by dependent children
3rd working holiday visa

Stay

12 months

Applicants must
  • have previously held 2 Subclass 417 visas in Australia. If you haven’t, see the 1st or 2nd Working Holiday visa
  • hold a passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction
  • be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - except for Canadian, French and Irish citizens who can be 18 to 35 years old (inclusive)
  • have undertaken, from 1 July 2019, 6 months of specified work while on your second Working Holiday visa, or a bridging visa in certain circumstances
  • not be accompanied by dependent children

SUBCLASS 485

Temporary Graduate visa

This temporary visa allows international students to live, study and work after they have finished studies.

Basic requirements

Applicants must


  • be under 50 years of age
  • hold an eligible visa
  • have a recent qualification in a CRICOS-registered course


The Subclass 485 visa has two different streams:
Graduate work stream

Purpose

For international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations in Australia needs

Stay

Usually up to 18 months

Requirements

Applicants must: 

  • be under 50 years of age
  • have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list
  • be assessed as having skills suitable for an occupation on the skilled occupation list
Post-study work stream

Purpose

For international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution

Stay

Usually between 2 and 4 years, depending qualifications

Requirements

Applicants must: 

  • be under 50 years of age
  • hold an eligible visa and meet the English proficiency requirement
  • have a recent degree in a CRICOS-registered course


Potential pathways
This visa cannot be extended.
However, holders of a Subclass 485 may be able to obtain permanent residency via applying for a Subclass 482 (TSS) visa, a Subclass 186 Employer Sponsored visa, a Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa, or a regional skilled or employer-sponsored visa ie. Subclass 491 or 494 visa.
